Beating Busyness

Good Day,

It's been a few weeks since I've posted here at Moms in Slippers.  I love to write so here I go.

Below is a picture of just some of lovely my fall decor.  The table is a traditional glass and brass piece that never goes out of style.  I moved my cherry table into the dining room and replaced it with this lovely table in my living room.  

I've been really super busy lately and I love it.  It's always a good busy for me.  Below is a picture of the front of my house.  I love the look and feel of the warmth that surrounds my front door.

I've been cleaning my house including all the windows in my home since the beginning of October.  I do a little each day.  I washed my walls, I scraped off all the tape residue from the windows and cleaned them thoroughly, but looking at them in the light of day, I see some lint clinging to my windows which means I'll have to go over them again.  I love a clean house so I thought to myself, this year I'm going to get started earlier than ever cleaning for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Seasons.  I love this time of year and I have even started decorating for Christmas this weekend.  I asked my husband to go up into the attic to get out all my Christmas decorations.  I already decorated for autumn and Thanksgiving.  I always have Christmas warmth flowing through my blood and when July rolls around, I start thinking about my Christmas menu and what my theme will be for the season.  This year I'm going with red and gold.  Last year my theme was snowmen and I think I'll add a lot of them to the mix again this year along with my red and gold.  I am thrilled.

So beating busyness for me is just impossible, but I love every second of being busy. It gives me a sense of richness and it brings me happiness and contentment.  My busyness enjoys taking care of my home and my family.  Cooking, cleaning and then doing all the things that I just love to do which is helping moms make ends meet, designing, writing, coaching, counseling, driving my son to school, picking him up from school and then driving him to work on the days he has work.  Life just doesn't get any better than this for me.

When I started Moms in Slippers my goal was to be a help and blessing to other stay-at-home moms who want to start a successful and highly profitable work at home business of their own.  I've been working from home for 12 years now and I love it.  I love being my own boss and I love putting in the long hours to keep my home based businesses, successful, prospering and thriving year after year.

MY PERSONAL WORK AT HOME STORY.

How My Work from Home Journey Began.

I worked in corporate America for a long time.  27 years to be exact. I began working at a local hospital 10 minutes from my home back in 1990 and I held other positions before settling comfortable as program coordinator of the residency program in medicine.  At the time, I had three young, precious pearls, two that were in elementary school and one in daycare.  I never ever liked leaving my baby girl in daycare, but then my mother retired from Lord and Taylor and volunteered to keep my daughter while my husband and I worked.  I was relieved because I just didn't feel right about leaving my daughter in daycare 8 hours a day, five days a week.  

Each and every day when I picked her up from the daycare center, she would immediately run into my arms the second I walked through the door because she was overjoyed to see me so you can probably understand why I felt such a great joy, a true sense of relief and gratitude to my parents for keeping my little girl because knowing that she would be at home with my parents every day gave me great comfort.  

BACK TO MY STORY.

When I began my career working at the hospital, it was just that; work.  As program coordinator of the residency program, I was constantly faced with endless challenges; people.  It wasn't the work, but the people with whom I worked that gave me the stress.  I learned some of the greatest lessons any individual could ever learn working at the hospital.


One of the most valuable lessons I learned was mastering every aspect of the computer. I became so computer savvy and such an expert, that I was able to help my co-workers and even my supervisor how to do things using the computer that they had no idea about.  While working for all those long years, I also learned that I was being limited in terms of being able to use all of my amazing God-given talents.  Hidden skills, gifts and talents that I didn't even know I had began to surface when I was asked to create a flyer for a conference the residents were having.  Still not thinking about using these gifts to my advantage, I continued to work with diligence each and every day at the hospital, but in the back of my mind I always had dreams of working for myself.  I just didn't know how to go about starting and running a successful and highly profitable home based business, but I would soon learn all the components of building my own work at home business.

LAID-OFF

In January 2002, a new regime joined the department of medicine and things began to change in our department overnight and on June 18, 2002, I was laid off from my position as program coordinator.  It was right then and there that I decided that I was going to stay at home and just enjoy spending quality time with my children for the entire summer.  This would give me an opportunity to plan out, wisely, what I would do when school started in September.  


When September rolled around, I decided that I wanted to stay at home for my family and start my own typing business.  I began to do some serious research about how to start my own typing business.  I found some great information, but I was able to use everything that I learned in my previous position as program coordinator and I did just that. 


MAGIC FINGERS TYPING SERVICE

(Pictured below is the very first flier I designed myself for my secretarial business.  It was then that I also discovered the gift of design)


In October 2002, Magic Fingers Typing Service was birthed.  I designed Magic Fingers in the most amazing way ever.  I created my own flyer that proved to be highly effective in procuring typing and transcribing jobs within days of posting it at colleges and libraries.  My first typing job was to type a dissertation.  I made $650 and then I was asked to transcribe interviews for a professor who was working on his Ph.D.  I made close to $3000 for the transcribing job.  Even though I was making great money, I was fully satisfied.  I wanted more and not necessarily more money, but more in terms of helping others.  I was truly earning an awesome living, but for me, this just wasn't enough.  



BRIGHT SHINING LIGHT BULB IDEAS

Magic Fingers was doing great.  I was getting more jobs than I ever imagined and I was elated, but still, something was missing.  I had all kinds of ideas rolling around in my head and I wanted and needed to get these ideas and create businesses with each and every one.  I was all over the map.  Magic Fingers Typing Service became Magic Fingers Secretarial Services because I was implementing more services to my business.  I was designing flyers, business cards and resumes.  Not long after that, I found myself creating coloring pages for children and then Angel on my Shoulder was founded.  Now this business was geared towards helping and blessing kids with Christian-based coloring pages that quickly turned in coloring books which was an enormous hit with families.  I turned Angel on my Shoulder into a phenomenon giving aways AOMS gift boxes filled with special items and surprises for children whose parents couldn't afford to buy them Christmas gifts.  


One day, as I was surfing the internet, I found a beautiful website filled with all kinds of beautiful designs.  As I was browsing this website, I found a graphic design software listed on the site that had a thirty-day free trial offer that I decided to give a try.  I immediately fell in love with the program and I was designing all kinds of unique and original masterpieces of my own.  I have to say that at first my designs looked okay, but looking back on them now, they look really amateurish.  


MASTERING THE ART OF DESIGN



After working with and using this great software program for thirty days, I was in love.  Designing became my passion and I haven't looked back.  I've been designing since 2002 and now Cyndi's Light Work Designs lives and thrives. www.cyndisdesignz.com. 

I'm still working to get Cyndi's Light Work Designs where I know it has the potential to be and I'm loving every single aspect of promoting and managing it.  I put in long hours, but those hours are highly productive with a sense of enjoyment and peace that encompasses me whenever I create a new design for my tee shirts, mugs and other merchandise.

My Tee Shirt Biz!

I wake up to a treasure chest of blessings every day and today was no

different.

My dear sweet friend, Derrick, called me this morning.  When I answered his call the first time, the call dropped.  He called right back and asked how I was doing.  He then said, “You know the t-shirt I bought from you earlier this year, the Praise Him t-shirt?” and I said, yes I remember he went on to say that a lady in the barbershop was interested in purchasing a shirt.  He asked me for my website (of which I have many…lol) so I gave him www.praisehimtwentyfour7.blogspot.com  This is a blessing that people are seeing my tees because this is a business I’ve been wanting to pursue for the longest.  I am truly excited, so we shall see how things turn out.  I will keep you posted.

Let's Start Your Home Based Business

Have you started your own home based company.  Is there something holding you back; maybe you just can’t decide on what business venture you’d like to tap into.  There are tons of work-at-home opportunities out there, but wouldn’t it make sense to start with your heart.  What I mean by this is simple and really, it is simple, real easy to start a home business when you start from your heart because your start up will be your passion.  This is the reason you want to start your home based business because you have a burning passion inside of you and you know for a fact that you can turn that passion into a profitable business, but your focus shouldn’t be earning profits, it should be doing what you love to do.

When I started my home business, I started it because I was laid-off from a job I despised and I didn’t want to even think about working for someone else ever again.  I didn’t want to carry the burden of having to go on job interviews and I didn’t want to deal with office

politics.  Why do these things that make life so very difficult on a job even have to come into play.  Why can’t we just go to work, do our jobs and from time-to-time, be heard when we want to implement our own ideas that we know for a fact will help to make things better for the company. Instead we are forced to deal with supervisors who think they have the right to down to you forgetting that you’re as much an adult as they are and that they have no right to talk to you in such a disparaging manner or tone.  This is unacceptable.

Okay, getting back to what I was saying because I’ll go on and on forever about working for someone else.  I started my own typing and transcribing business because it was something that I knew had the potential for me to earn a lot of money.  Magic Fingers Secretarial Service was born and passed away once I discovered it was not my passion at all.  I began to feel like it was a major chore for me to type dissertations even though I made really good money.  At first, I was thrilled to have started Magic Fingers because I thought typing was truly my passion, but I realized that owning a home based typing business was not for me when I discovered the art of design.  Now don’t get me wrong, I love to type, but for myself and I did enjoy it for as long as it lasted, but when I began creating works of art with my software program, a fire ignited in me and Cyndi’s Light Work Designs was founded.  It’s amazing how when I began creating my magnificent masterpieces, I thought to myself, Cynthia, you’ve been wanting to have your own t-shirt business for the longest and your

design business is the gift God gave you to start your t-shirt business.  Isn’t it awesome how God puts the pieces of the puzzle together for you out of His love for you.

My desire and initial thoughts were to open an online store to sell my design on various merchandise. I looked into CafePress and Zazzle. When I read about the commission, I closed both stores and just laid dormant for way too long because I just didn’t have the funds to open a physical store and CafePress and Zazzle were out of the question; my oh my  was I ever wrong.  I am one to research and research, but for some reason, I didn’t research CafePress and Zazzle nearly enough to know that anyone can have a great online store creating and using their very own designs.  Now I have several stores on both CafePress

and Zazzle; my only regret is that I wish I would have kept them open; it was a lesson I had to learn.  I am growing my stores and I am loving it.  I have to promote my stores to drive traffic, but that’s not too hard and when you have a business you love, its never hard work to put in hard work if you know what I mean. I thoroughly enjoy working all of my businesses and blogs.  Its like it just feeds me because I love to share my stories to be a help and blessing to others who may be thinking of opening an online store or starting a home

business of their own.

If you want to start a business working in the comfort of your home, don’t wait another   second.  What is your passion; what gifts and talents do you possess that you think would give you the happiness you desire and that you can use to start and grow your own business. 

Think of your passion as a career.  You probably have a passion embedded deep inside and you that you’ve given deep and careful thought to; well think no more; if you know like I know you need to just write down your thoughts right now, pen your goals, create a plan and start your own home based business.  If you’ve been equipped with all the right tools, your business cannot possibly fail.

How to Use WordPress

Have you ever tried to use WordPress and found the task too daunting.  My goodness, I thought I'd never be able to use this amazing platform for my website.  I must have tried WordPress a thousand times.  I'd walk away only to go back again and again because I was determined to figure out how to use this awesome tool for building my website.

I've used other platforms for building my websites, but I kept going back to WordPress because I was hearing such great things about it; their themes, plugins and everything else that makes WordPress so great.

I tried Freewebs, Bravenet and Weebly and I really did like all of them, but they weren't exactly what I needed for my business.  WordPress offers so much in terms of making a great website with all their great features.  It took me some time to figure it out, but once I understood how it all worked, I was excited just knowing that WordPress is so much easier to use than I ever thought and with me being highly computer savvy, so I think, I've been able to have a wonderful website presence for all my businesses.

Marketing Your Business

Does your business need a boost.  Have you looked at your marketing materials.  How does your "headline" read?  Is your headline powerful enough to keep your business growing?  Does your headline pertain to your readers or just to you.  Does your headline lead you to sales?

In the never-ending world of marketing, it is important that you write a killer ad.  You know the ones; like all the big businesses in the world, they have great ads.  Think of yourself as a huge corporation.  You need a great headline for your business; one that will hold your readers attention, grab them and make them keep reading whatever it is you are offering.  For some, you will be offering typing and transcribing services.  That one line ad is one of the most important keys to the success of your business.  Be sure that your headline is one that is powerful and conveys a message that you have what they want or need.

Marketing materials are ultra powerful tools that can either, well you know the line; make you or break you.  You need great looking marketing materials that make the eye wander through whatever it is you are marketing. Is your message easy to read; is it easy to understand and what is the point you are trying to get across to your readers.  Whatever the point is, it needs to be stated clearly and it needs to be immediate. You don't need any hype.  You just need a powerful "brief and to the point" message that will turn into sales for you.

Here are a few that I use for my business.

• Are you in need of an AA, but you don't want to hire a secretary?

• Are you in need of a virtual assistant who can provide you with superior secretarial skills?

• Do you need an AA to help you with your work?

My marketing materials appeal to me and if they appeal to me, I am sure they will appeal to my audience simply because I am targeting an audience that needs what I have.  I hear the gurus talk about how marketing materials don't have to appeal to me, but why would I create or design something that doesn't appeal to me.  I have the eye and the writing skills to either make or break my business.  Marketing is a large part of any business.  I include it in my daily list of things to do because it is just as important to my business as any other aspect of my business.  I love to market and I do so every chance I get.  The following materials are great to market your business:  flyers, promotion letters, brochures, websites, business cards, mugs, key chains, t-shirts and more. 

Always remember, your headline is important to your business no matter what that business may be!!!

Loving What You Do Pays Off

It was a lovely Saturday and I had plans to work on Moms in Slippers to share some things that I thought would be a help to my audience. My daughter who was visiting from Maryland had different plans. My daughter is engaged to be married and decided to go shopping for her wedding rings so she, my husband and I made our way to Delaware to see what we could find at the jewelry store where her fiancé bought her engagement ring. My oh my, the diamond rings in that store were brilliant! I found a ring that blinded me as it sat in the case.

I showed the ring to my husband and then of course, I asked him if he would buy it for me. He smiled and said, “We’ll see!” I knew what that meant. After twenty-six years of marriage, I deserve that diamond ring! That magnificent ring only cost $5200. The employee asked us how long we’ve been married and when we told her she said, “Oh, she deserves a new ring.” My husband immediately chimed in and said, “I just bought her a brand new car so the ring will have to wait.” And then he said, “I may get it for her. “ I’m excited because my birthday is quickly approaching as is Christmas so my finger will be patiently waiting for that bling ring…LOLLLLL

Cyndi's Light Work Designs

Any way, my daughter found her rings and they have to be ordered so that’s done. We then made our way to one of my favorite stores; the Christmas Tree Shops. My daughter was looking for frames to place on the tables for her reception. It was a miss today. I was really surprised because I can always find something at the Christmas Tree Shop.

After that, we made our way to Friendly’s for lunch and then home. I had to give my dear mother her lunch, change her diaper and relax for a while. My daughter was resting as well as my husband. Not long thereafter, my daughter informed me that she had to go pick up her fiancé from Philly. He was at his fraternity’s conclave in the park and she was ready to get back home to D.C. Well, she made it safely to the park down in Philly and she called me to see if I had received her text message. I ran upstairs to get my cell phone only to see this picture her fiancé had taken of a design that I created for the Omega Psi Phi’s. I was elated when I saw that gigantic banner hanging up down in Philly.

Working and working some more always pays off in an enormous way. If you’re working from home, but you are not fully committed to your business, it’s time to change your mindset. Working my businesses consistently is a gift in itself. So go on and get busy and unwrap all the gifts that you have and work your business like you’ve never worked it before. It will give you gifts you’ll be unwrapping for the rest of your life.
