Usually the company will set a particular number of characters as one line. For example, 60 characters is counted as one line. Then each character of the transcription is counted and divided into 60 and this determines the number of lines you typed for the transcription project. Then you simply multiply the number of lines by the amount you're paid by the line to calculate your pay.
Per Minute
The per minute rate is often used for general transcription. With this pay method, the transcriptionist gets paid per minute of recording. Keep in mind that it will take you approximately four times the length of the recording to transcribe a good recording. So, if you're getting a one hour recording, you can expect to spend four hours transcribing it. It will take longer to transcribe challenging audio with accents and multiple speakers. This is why the pay rate should be higher for difficult transcripts. While this works similarly like the per line term, you should agree on the standard page layout, the size of paper, the font used, the spacing and even the margins.

A new, inexperienced transcriptionist will start at low rates when working for a transcription company. But it's a good way to get your foot in the door and build experience.
